I'm thinking of exchanging my 50g for a 65g..
(If they'll let me return the 50, I'll get the 65, but since it was a special order, I may be stuck with a 50g breeder)
I already have a Eheim 2213, which I've added to my 60g originally to seed for this new tank, but I kind of like the additional filtration since the tank is heavily stocked. Lets just say, it's working out well there. I also think the 2213 would be borderline for a 50, and definately not enough for a 65.
I purchased a Rena Filstar XP3 at Petsmart for $104. While this would work, and from what I read is a great filter, I want the best. I was considering returning it and getting either an Eheim 2217 or Professional II.
Silence is important to me... I like the 2213 that I have, small hum that can't be heard when the cabinet door is shut. I've heard mixed reports on the XP3, that it's noisy, and that it's silent. I do hear a consensus that it's not as quiet as a Eheim Pro II.. more like a FLuval(my 404 is more noisy that I would like)
The 2215 is the same price, the 2217 is $25 more, and the Pro II with media is about $75 more. Cost here is not really the issue.. as paying more now could save you money in the long run. So assuming they were all the same price, what would you go with. (I can see it now.. EHEIM EHEIM EHEIM!)
What I've read:
2215/2217
PRO: A very solid quiet filter that includes media. Will last forever. NO BYPASS, simple design is a positive for reliability. Flexible media.
Cons: Older technology. No filter baskets. Greed intake tubing stands out in tank. Priming(which I personally find easy)
Eheim Pro II:
Pro: Quiet, Media Basket, Flow Meter
Cons: More complex design may make less reliable than 2215/2217. COST(I've said to ignore that though). I've read that they need frequent filter changes!?!??!?
Rena XP3
PRO: Media Baskets, "no bypass". I've read good things about this filter. Lots of flow! A lot of people seem to prefer to Fluval, but choose over Eheim only because of price. I like the "frost" tubing.
Cons: Newer, long term reliability not known. Mixed reports on Noise. Not an eheim.
So would YOU go with, assuming price is no isssue.
