I recently started to see bubbles gathering around the perimeter of the tank and around any plants that break the surface of the water. I read of the significance of this but I can't find the information now. Can anyone tell me what this means? Is it to do with the O2 or the nutrient level in the water??

I can't answer your question but I am curious as well. I've noticed a lot of airbubbles on top of my water lately. I do have two bubble makers but the bubbles have never collected at the top of the water like this.....

I agree if you look most Gouramis build a bubble nest for there little fry. If this is what is happening expect a few more spots until they find a place they like.

I agree with dorkfish and needeles that it could be your gouramis or betta making a bubble nest.

sometimes excess protein in the water can cause this. sometimes it's also caused by medications like melafix.

Hi guys I am facing same prob since yesterday. I have two pairs of goldfish (I dont know how much of them are males and how much are females) and two pairs of iridiscent shark. can anybody tell me what is this and the difference bw male and females? I didnot use any medicines etc except anticlorine that I put when I change water a week ago.

Fine bubbles on the surface can be an indication of dissolved organic compounds, DOCs, in the water. It may be time to do a water change.

Does it look like a "bubble nest"? or just some random floating bubbles? My guess is your Gouramis or your Betta is responcible. I am curious tho, how is your betta doing with your gouramis?
I did my usual once a week water change and the bubbles just come back after a few days. I don't know if its a bubble nest or not but it is a string of bubbles maybe a 1/4 inch around the edge of the tank. My gouramis are both males, if that makes a difference. The betta and the gouramis get along fine. Once in a while at feeding time mr. betta chases them away, especially the first feeding of the day, or if I'm giving them blood worm treats, but other than that they live quite peacefully together. They are piggies at feeding time though, so I totally understand mr. betta's stance! : ) If it is dissolved organics, does that mean I'm overfeeding? I do try to be conservative.

What size is the tank? Stocking in your sig? What's the percentage of weekly partial? Nitrates before and after partial?

My tank is a 21 gallon. (odd euro size). My fish stock are as shown below. I change approx. 40 percent every Thursday. Before my change last thurday temp was 77, ph 7.4, ammonia 0, nitrite .1. I don't have a test kit for nitrates. Today temp is 80 because I turned air conditioning off two days ago when it was a bit cooler, ammonia 0, nitrite .3.
