I am using an Emperor 280 which has two slots for filter cartridges. When it comes time to replace the cartridge (after rinsing out as many times as it holds up) I plan to put the new one in the second slot to allow it to "age" before removing the old one. How long should I have this overlap in order to let the good bacteria take over the new filter? Thanks.

You know your supposed to bath the cartridge in a bucket of your aquariums water right? rinsing it with tap water kills the good bacteria. :read:

Yup, in the bucket of vacuumed water only. I do know that you shouldn't just take the old filter out and put a new one in or risk losing good bacteria. I do not know how long it takes for the bacteria to populate the new filter before tossing the old one. Thanks for making sure though.

I would give it a week to ten days. After that you should be good to go.

the replacement cartridges are only carbon and blue floss. not much bacteria on them any way the wheel is where your bacteria lives what i did with mine is got a a/c foam and cut to fit in the slots then you get more bacteria growth.also what i do is pre filter my intakes with filter floss.you don't have to clean your media much that way just the floss on the intake.
