i have brown algae on the glass, the gravel, and the plants. I do not turn on the light in the tank. If i turn on the light in the tank will it get rid of the algae? I was wondering if i have this algae because of low light conditions.

Thanks for your time!

How's your water levels? Most of the time, algae is caused by excessive nutrients in the water. How much and how often do you feed? Does your tank catch some direct sunlight? Sorry lots of questions, just some background checking.

how old is your tank? many times, newer tanks (like less than 3 months) will have problems with brown algae due to high levels of silica. this is normal, but is present in glass and gravel and sand. once your tank is mature and you have removed extra nutrients with regular water changes, the algae will go away. DO NOT get an algae eater to get rid of this for you. it is easily removed by scrubbing and tank cleaning

yes, i second khombre. what is your tank cleaning schedule? your bio load (what lives in the tank) and are you possibly overfeeding?
