37 gallon fish suggestions

My 37 gallon will soon be ready to stock, but I am rethinking my original plans to build it around tetras. My water is slightly hard and alkaline (nothing extreme) but it would be pushing it for the ones I was interested in. So I am looking for fish with a fairly wide water chemistry tolerance, who are, above all, peaceful and interesting to watch. I will be housebound after surgery for quite a while, so will have lots of quality time in front of the tank!

The one thing I definitely want are cories, preferably pandas, but they would have to adapt somewhat. Would they work?

Others I am considering: leopard danios, male guppies (I know they won't work if I do danios), male platys, white clouds, gold barbs (not very exciting, but pleasant enough little piggies as I remember them from years ago), maybe a pearl gourami?

A cooler water tank would be nice too, but that would eliminate the gourami and maybe the platyss -- I have little experience with them to have a feel for their temperature range.

Any other suggestions? How many of each would you suggest? I'm not married to any of this -- I'm still looking, and would love to draw on your expertise.

One question about the white clouds -- I have never kept them and only seen them in crowded LFS tanks. Are they active schoolers, or do they just sort of hang out together like the gold barbs?

This is a deep tank -- 22" -- so swimming levels are a consideration.

Thanks for your help!
