Please! My plea is to spay and neuter your pet dogs and cats!!! Also if you can... spay and nueter strays... in many big cities there are programs that do this for free if the animal is a stray!

Please donate to your local shelter too :)

Just a little PSA!!!

You mean people still aren't being responsible pet caretakers? If you're not breeding a dog due to it's great genetic lines (AND know there is a market for them--I know a couple of bobo's who are stuck with 4 almost fully-grown bloodhounds out of their young stud and psycho-crazy bi***), then it's an injustice to NOT have them neutered. Should be illegal. Yup, it IS too bad we can't do that with people--the concept raised hell right before the 20th century, too.

I have 2 dogs and 5 cats and all of them are spayed or neutered. I firmly believe in it. When I worked at the no kill shelter...see sig.... they do it as young as 8 weeks old. The younger, the less problems and complications they have. Here they have a low cost spay/neuter program, but it really doesnt save you too much. I wish they had a free spay/neuter for strays. I would be picking up all those cats that hang out around my parents house and keep having inbred kittens. Poor cats are all stunted. It really is a shame.

Jodi,
There are groups like alley cat allies that run trap-spay-release programs, try contacting the Illinois chapter. The Illinois Pet Friendly plate proceeds are supposed to go to help fund programs like this and low-cost spay/neuter programs.

The last stray we took in two years ago, was an unfixed, emaciated and nearly dead from starvation maine coon. I had him fixed while looking for his people in case he was a loved but very lost pet, didn't even bat an eye about the possibility of fixing someone else's animal.
Take care,
Mary.

You know, I really think all of us posting on this thread should be fish population control ambassadors here on AC. So many people ask stuff like "how can I breed my mollies" or "is my fish pergnant (!)"; we need to let everyone know that fish are animals too and unless one is trying to grow fry as feeders or whatnot, there is no real need to try to get your fish to mate. I know mduros has already pointed this out today, as have I. How 'bout it?

alot of the poeple asking questions like that obviously have done no resaerch on how to raise the fish or have room to keep them when they all outgrow the ten gallon tank they'll be in. so, then when they run out of space they decided to release them.
people do it with all sorts of pets.
Chicago has a breeding colony of parakeets near The University

agreed, everyone. I think there should definitely be more stringent control over people wanting to breed their pets. But this government is too messed up to spend time and money on something as "trivial" as animals.

I ONLY have spayed/neutered pets, and wish I could do that for my fishies!

I have 2 dwarf puffers of opposite sex and am worried about the possibilty of their breeding. I don't want to separate them because they get along so well and enrich each other mentally. I've been told to just let them have the babies and they will die if I don't take the special precautions to house and feed them. I think it's cruel and wish I could take my dp's to the teeny-tiny spay and neuter clinic.

Heck, I don't even want to breed MYSELF. I want to adopt kids, rather than adding to the planet's human overpopulation.

I totally agree that those noobs wanting to breed fish right away are idiots and irresponsible. They obviously haven't thought about all the special considerations they're going to have to make to keep fry alive and well.

Great message!! Definitely the truth! And now with designer dogs... I work part time for a local vet and we had a lady in with a puppy the other day. I swear to god it was a mutt and she paid ofer $3,000 for it!!! Granted both of its parents were registered, but still!

Just a side note... I had a great (funny) conversation with a friend about the "dumbing down" of America. (We are both child-less) It seems all of the intelligent people have decided to adopt, not have kids, or only have a few kids. However I know one woman who has one part time job, is not married, and has 3 kids from 3 different fathers! With child support and welfare, she doesn't have to work!

Chicago has a breeding colony of parakeets near The UniversityActually alot of cities do... Rent the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Great film. I work here in Hyde Park where the colonies are. They are monk parakeets, slightly smaller than a parrot. It's very strange watching flocks of birds that belong in the tropics flying overhead. Sadly though, they have a very high incidence of head and brain tumors and facial deformities in the young, these babies never make it to adulthood and only last a few days or weeks. They are not sure what causes this, but it is possibly due to some nesting sites being located near high tension power lines. And yes, they are an introduced species that don't belong here, but are here because people either lost them, or let them go due to how noisy they are, or whatever other excuse they came up with.
Take care,
Mary.

* inre above about breeding fish--I agree, it's the same thing except what, they're smaller and contained in glass boxes?

* these new "designer" dogs are, and I apologize if I offend anyone, PERFECT for really stupid people. I adopted a great "designer"!! Boxer/black lab, beautiful animal, at 19 months he's incredible. Shoulda sold him for BIG bucks instead of finding a great family, eh? (And folks don't realize the genetics of it all--they don't always breed "true" for "cute" dogs, and god help you if you try to breed your designers since they aren't sterile like mules)

*ever wonder why any two idiots can breed over and over even if they can't even afford to feed themselves, but to adopt a child a couple has to go through hell and back?

designer dogs....pshahh!!! Im so sick of peoples shnoodles and peekapoos and labradoodles and puggles and shepadors..... Ok, I made that last one up, but COME ON PEOPLE!!! Its a mutt, any way you slice it. I guess there really is a fool born every second, and another (smarter) fool who will sell them whatever they "need".... I totally agree with the dumbing down of America, and I have to wonder whos dumber, the ones in charge or the sheeple for following?!

that's exactly how I see it. I've often said the "any two idiots can make a child" line myself. Besides, my family dynamics are so messed up (mental illness and personality disorders, not to mention dysfunctionality, on both sides of my family) that I think it would work out better if I DIDN'T pass on my genes. That's a choice that I make, and I think I would be doing the world a favor.

Don't even get me started on the dumbing down of this country... The stupidity of the general public never ceases to amaze me.

I agree... My hubby and I may adopt one day.... I don't want to add to the population explosion.... Down here it's over populated already! 70% of babies here are born to illegals. Some friends ours have already adopted a baby born to illegals and many of our friends are looking into it. They prefer to adopt and help a child who has been born into a difficult situation....

Back to the pet thing.... Spay and Neuter! There is a free once a month program here called SNAP. They are pretty good!
