I've been running the Emperor 400 filter on my 90 gal tank for about a month now. I'm unhappy with the amount of mechanical noise it makes. I followed all of the suggestions in the troubleshooting guidelines (checking the water level, the impellor (to be sure of no blockage/that it's free to spin), and the placement of the intake tube (ie:seated firmly in the filter box)) and everything seems to be assembled correctly. Yet there is still a lot of impellor/motor sound. Has anyone had this problem and if so are there any suggestions for me?? I emailed emperor's tech support but have not been responded to (bad sign I guess).

Thanks for any help!

when you say 400 do you mean 400 g?? If thats so, get a smaller filter. You dont need that much power on a 90 g.....Thats why there might be so much noise.

Actually it makes noise when in feeding mode (low flow) thats when the valve lever is in the "down" position.
BTW 400gph on a 90 is nowhere near excessive, no such thing as too much filtration.

acctually that might not be enough. 400 gph filter on a 90 gallon tank is only cycleing it about 4 1/2 times. 5 times should be a minimum, where as 7-10 times is more desireable.

as for the filter, your might just have a mechanical issue, but it still isnt filtering the water enough times, im sorry to say

Im confused. My topfin filter says "for up to 10 g" on the front. Does that mean its cycling 10 g per hour??

Most filter flow rates are based on the filter being empty- ie no media in it. When you add media and then it starts to trap stuff in the media, the flow rate goes even lower. That is why folks generally recommend higher turnover rates.

did you just buy it? is it the new one with the blue mid level filter?

if so, dont push the intake tube all the way down, lift it up a little bit to allow more water flow and less vibration. worked for me.

thanks

thanks for all that feed back. I'll try to pull the intake tube up a bit to see if that helps (good suggestion). I finally called tech support today and they think it could be defective (a molding issue around the impellor) so worst case I'll exchange it. I do have two questions however.
1. I'll have to take the filter off and get to the store and back before I can start the new one. How long do you think the tank can go w/o a filter running w/o harming my fish (5 silver dollars, 1 gold gourami, 1 african frog).
2. I agree I probably do need to get another filter to go w/the emperor..what type and size to you all suggest?

Thanks again
