I was at the LFS today and they had some blue dempsey's. They were absolutely stunning, the nicest looking freshwater fish i have ever seen. So does anyone have any first hand experience with them? ive heard they were not very hardy and for 30 bucks each i certainly wouldn't want them to die on me.

I had some that were lost in shipping, developed a case of ich that was untouchable. I've never heard of not being able to cure ich. One by one they got more and more covered and died.
I also hear that their color washes out as they get bigger.
I've also heard some people have them and love them.
no their color INTENSIFIES as they get bigger. I saw 2 5-6" ones at a LPS. absolutely STUNNING!!!

I've tried them twice and lost them both times. If I was going to try again I would fishless cycle a tank and only put the blue dempseys in, and clean the tank at least once a week. They seem to have a weak immune system.

The largest one I have seen is a 6 inch BD in a LFS asking $120. The blue color isn't as intense as the small ones and the mouth has a slight deformity of underbiting. These mutant fish have high mortality and many people have trouble raising them to maturity.

the reason they are so hard to keep/expensive is because when they are breed you have to breed with a dempseywith the blue genes and one without otherwise you will get a pure jack dempsey brood. and when you do get blue dempseys they normally die because they are so weak and are normally eaten but the jack dempsey fry. you dont need to have a blue dempsey to get blue dempseys. you just needa fish with the blue genes. as for the coloring it depends on the fish and the habitat they are kept in. they are very weak fish as comnparedto the jack dempsey and therefore should be watched carefully.

hmm sounds like they can vary in intensity when they get older?! the only 2 adults I saw were VERY COLORFUL, much more intense then the young. course dat doesn't mean they all will turn out like dat.

Tightdog1 , explained it pretty good. Ill also add that any large blue dempseys ive seen were far more intense in color.

I got 3 about 6-8 weeks ago. Color intensifies as they
get bigger. I have them in my planted tank. Look gorgeous!
