i want some ghost shrimp but i heard they die easily and eat fish fry is that true

shrimps are very sensitive to water quality. if there is any ammonia, nitrite, or anything else poisonous in your water they will be the first to die. so make sure your tank is cycled and settled (e.g. bacteria have caught up from new fish additions) before you add shrimp. Even then, I've had quite a few die probably because they're not high quality. ghost shrimp, in particular, are bred in tanks and are "cheap" so maybe stores and handlers don't treat them very well :(

i've heard the predatory ghosties stories, too, but i've only seen mine eat dying snails. mine have all been very peaceful toward my fish, but I've never had fry.

hope that helps!

I disagree...Ghost shrimp are fairly hardy. They don't have a long lifespan, but nor do most small shrimp. They can target small fry, though you can reduce predation by providing fry with floating plants to hide in (they'll prefer floating plants to gravel-level hideouts).

All my ghosties died when I recently changed all my gravel and experienced low levels of nitrite. The only thing I noticed with my fishies was rapid breathing in my oto's, but no fish losses, but every single last ghost shrimp died. I guess it's possible I got a bad batch.

I've had ghosties that lived for over a year and a half! But that's probably the absolute max of their lifespan. They're very amusing and I'd highly recommend them.

it sounds like i got a bad batch of ghosties, then. unfortunately, because they're "cheap" and usually considered feeders by stores, they are treated poorly. if i wanted them as feeders, i would definitely breed my own, but all i want are a dozen or so good, healthy ghost shrimp for pets :(

plah, my experience w/ ghost shrimps was that they dont live long. amano shrimps are the same size and thrive longer imo.
