Does its coloration ever vary, or does it always look that bland? Does it ever look like the fish in the front of this picture?

he sometimes shows of some colors but not like that. He gets a large black stripe and his fins get a nise rose color.

I think you are correct Vieja Synspilum especially sense you said he turns pinkish. if thats what it is they get very beautiful and large they dont color up till they are about 6-8 inches then they get really colorful. look at all of the pictures of the link I gave you they will prettymuch loose that stripe when mature the 4th picture in that link shows it on a younger species I still think it is a Vieja Synspilum. It is definately not a jd or gt.
