I think it is cruel how some people treat bettas, keeping them in little 1/2 gallon bowls. They should at least have 5 gallons with filtration. What do you think?

well, yes. it's bad, but not nearly as bad as a goldfish in a bowl, since bettas don't get nearly as big as they do, can breathe air, and aren't crap machines. they can LIVE in a bowl, provided you do daily or every other daliy water changes, but they won't THRIVE in a bowl. you need nice, big aquarium for that. personally, i'd never keep one in a bowl.

Depends on the aquarist. I've seen splendid examples of bettas kept in 1 gallon planted nano-tanks where the aquarist would do daily water changes, feed royally, and basically treat the betta like a prince. On the flip side, I've also seen bettas housed in 5 or 10 gallon tanks which had deplorable living conditions...water hasn't been changed in weeks, glass is covered in algae, betta is listless and subjected to neglect. Which case is the crueller?

But generally, I agree. Bettas shouldn't be kept in cups or 1/2 gallon jars.

I think it's really mean how pet stores keep them in little I think even if you put it in a bowl It's better then a goldfish. When I was starting and had a 2 gallon bowl I wanted a tropical fish. The person said I needed to get a goldfish for my bowl!!!!!!! And I did!!!

Even worse is how there shipped : in tiny bags (maybe a square inch of space, at the most) with just enough water to keep them wet.

wow, that sucks. why must bettas be abused so?

Is it true that wild bettas live in puddles?? I hear alot from betta owners. I personaly dont believe it.

EDIT : I thought most fish were shipped in large bags?? I was at my LFS and they were putting in a shipment of fish and they were kept in fairly large plastic bags, so Why would they stick bettas in small bags??

they live in shallow rice paddies, of only a few inches of water, yes, but the paddies go on and on for miles. thats NOT a puddle.

P thanx. Cant wait to tell some betta owners that....

I honestly don't know how a betta would get into a puddle. Slow-flow streams, ditches, ponds and possibly small lakes are MUCH more likely. They do live in rice paddies in there natural location, but the rice paddie is not a creation of nature.
