Fellas - I have 2 pair apisto cacatuodes in a 29g. Long story short - I suspect a spawn is imminent for one pair. Other than observing, what do I do? For example, should I setup a 10-g holding tank if aggression becomes an issue? Are the eggs/fry usually consumed by other fish, or can they survive the environment? What do others do under similar circumstances?

You should start setting up a fry tank. Move the fry into the tank about 2 wks after birth and feed bbs and other small foods and do very frequent water changes. You could try leaving them in the main aquarium and some may survive depending on what you have in there. I have five 1/2 inch survivors in my 29 gallon that managed to stay away from my tetras. It depends upon whether you want to raise as many fry as you can or you just want to observe apisto breeding behavior. Since you have 2 pairs, I would be worried about the other female doing something to the fry, if that happens you can move them and raise them yourself. As long as the entrance to the breeding cave is not too big, the female should not have too much trouble defending the eggs and fry.
