Can I change out my gravel???

Waverider

I want my own ocean
:help:

Call me fickle...but I am tired of my gravel color. I want to change the color and was curious as to how much of the original gravel I should keep in there. I was thinking of leaving about a 1/4 inch of original gravel and topping it off with new stuff.

Will this workout ok? Will it stress the fish out too much or harm the good bacteria too much? My water is good and the tank is strong so I think they can take it.

Thanks everyone! :D

You can change out 100% of the gravel, and not kill the fish, becuase most of the bacteria resides in the filter, but you will send the tank into a miny cycle, so be prepared to test the water, then change the water, every day.

i changed my gravel out. well i went from sand to gravel. what i did was take all the fish out and put them in another holding tank. you can also use a rubber tub. i would make sure its new. i had plants so i took them out also. i took 50% of the water out. i have a tall tank made it easy to get at the sand. once it was all ready i scooped out the sand and put the new gravel in. it took me some time with a big tank. i had 2 fry fish that survived the whole deal i didnt see when taking the other fish out.

I recently added more gravel to my tank. I put all my fish and plants in a ten gallon tank with half of the water, and then took the rest of the water out. I put the filter and heater on the ten gallon tank with the fish. I then covered all but four square inches of the gravel, creating a sloped substrate with plants in the deeper level. I then started adding more water until it was about a third of the way full, then I put the decorations and plants in. Then I returned the fish and water to the tank (1st the fish and then the water ;) )
