Hello all!

So last night I took the time to start 'rescaping' my 55 gallon tank to help my new cichlid friends. I used to have two halves of a sunken ship in there, which I now put into another tank and have started creating as many caves out of smaller to medium rocks.

Since then, I have noticed a TON of aggression in the tank as they fish are fighting over the new caves. Is this normal? Should I take steps to reduce this aggression?

I also had some questions as to what really constitues a cave. I have some of those rocks that come with holes in them (I hope you know what I mean), but I only have so much space to put them up against the glass. Will these fish use these types of rocks if I just put them in the middle of the tank? I am wondering this because then the 'caves' wont really have a back to them and I would assume hard to defend since an 'intruder' would be able to come in from the front or back. As a comprimise, I have put some of the rocks without a back in front of a fake plant to create somewhat of a back to it.

My last question is what types of rocks can I use in the tank? I am thinking of picking up some rocks at a local landscape store, but would I need to clean them and how would I go about making sure they wont hurt my water quality?

Getting rocks at the landscape store is the cheapest way to go(other than finding them). I got some random slate peices and stacked them to make caves. It only cost a few bucks. You could make some caves with back on them like you said. A lot of people also use terra-cotta pots and coconut shells to provide cover from others.

As for the aggression goes I would say its to be expected while they each get their own territories.

The aggression is normal as they re-assert their pecking order....and fish are really good at turning all kinds of nooks and crannies into caves...just try to provide a numerous variety of spaces between the rocks and they will do the rest....enjoy!

Thanks for the input. I have a 55 gallon tank, which is relatively taller than it is 'deep'. The measurements are something in the range of 4' long, 18'' tall, and 1' 'deep' or wide. The problem I am having right now is that the lower half of the tank looks awesome, but the upper portion is blah and empty.

I am thinking of trying to put some sort of rock structure in the tank to fill the higher portions of the tank. I am sort of leery though since the rocks could just fall over. I could glue them with silicone, but I am also wondering what might grow in between the rocks in the areas I cannot clean up. Of course, if I glue them together, I would never be able to clean at all. Do you have any input or ideas for me?
