Hey guys,
Was checking out ebay for a canister filter for my 55 gallon and I was just wondering what you guys thought the best brand would be. I'm hoping it'll help with my oscar till I can get him a larger tank.
Also, I was looking into UV sterilizers... are they worth the trouble? Seems they can hook right up with the canister filter.. Will my fish get a tan? :)
Thanks!!
Sarah

i really dont need them for fw tanks. i use fluval filters. i like it other then the trouble i am having with it right now. over all its been a great filter. a few other ones that i see people using and like a lot are Marineland Magnum, RENA Filstar XP and Eheim.

Eheim is the best, but not the cheapest (a 2217 would work well). I would also recommend Rena Filstars (XP2 & XP3), Cascade (1000 & 1200), and Fluval (although not the '05' series, but the FX5, which would be serious overkill for your 55).

the fluval 405 would be the best addition to your 55. great mechanical and chemical filtration, and pretty good biological. fluvals have always been and done what i needed, i havent found a need to go more expensive.

As stated about it doesnt get better than ehiem but there are very costly. I would go with a Fluval or the Rena filstar if you cant afford the ehiem. I had a cascade HOB that was terrible so I personlay wouldnt get one of there canisters after that experience.

I use a rena filstars xp1 on my 20 gallon and it works great plus it wasn't that expensive. I think and xp2 or xp3 would get the job done for you.

You mean there are other canisters besides Eheim? Not on my tanks there aren't.

Nothing but Magnum 350's on all tanks here.
I have 4 Rena Filstars XP2 and XP3. Great filter for the money. Easy to setup, easy to clean and easy to maintain. They are also nice and quiet.

I'll never buy any canister but an Ehiem again.

They are quiet, but not so quiet I wonder if they are running. I can pack with carbon, bio beads or whatever I want for the results desired. Not a few inches of 4 or 5 items that individually are not enogh. I like the simplicity of construction and the ease of assembly and disassembly. The internal flow path is direct as can be, not weaving through chambers reducing flow. Minimal flow reduction, unlike other filters in service from what I have seen from friends who have other styles.
In 30+ years of using them, I have never, repeat never, had a failure of a motor, impellor or gasket leakage.
