Can I have multiple firemouths in one tank? For now, I have one in a 45 gallon tank, was wondering if I could get another or if they would tear each other up.

I have 12 in a 125 right now. All are between 3" and 4". I have 4 Male and 8 Female. It has been my experience that the firemouth is more show than go as far as aggression. My males are always flairing their gills at each other and sometimes chasing but that has been all. Your mileage may vary and I may just have a mild batch of firemouths.

Uh, yeah our LFS doesn't seem to know what they are talking about. It seems the 'firemouth' they sold us was a red jewel, any idea on their behavior?

Your LFS should be able to tell the difference between a Firemouth and a Jewell.

My LFS tells me that Jewells can be a little on the aggressive side, but I have never kept any.

Much more aggressive than firemouths. Totally different fish; 50 million years of divergent evolution seperate them. I'd find a shop that orders clues from the wholesaler for its staff.

I imagine a pair would would in a 45, but that'd be about it really.

VERY aggresive, My 3 inch jewel harassed my 4 1/2 inch convict to death!
