Plastic plants would be your best option for no work but if you want to try live plants I would try some java moss, java ferns, or anubias nana. They are low light plants that will require very little care.

You will know the wood is ready when the water stops getting so brown, a little brown is ok depending on your tank size, even allot of brown is ok, just depends on what youi want your water to look like
my small 8" peice took like 12 hours of boiling changing the water every hour or so. and it sunk right to the bottom.
