question; can i use the lava rocks they sell in canadian tire (for bbq's) in my aquarium? i read the bag and it does not say if the lava rocks are chemically treated.

need advise. :sim:

If you boil it first I dont see why not. It would probably be cheaper to get it from a landscape store though, they sell it for gardens, etc.

is it safe to use rocks that can be bought from Pike or Home Depot? The kind that are for landscaping? All i have to do is boil them for a little while?

Nautral lava rocks are fine to use in your aquarium they where the first bilogical media as far as I know because there so porus. There is better medias for bio now though. As far as the border rocks at home depot I wouldnt use them uless you know exactly what type of rock they are. There could be cement mixed in or there could be rocks that will affect your water chemistry in the blend. I would ask to see if they can tell you what materials are in it.

Good point! I will probably steer clear of that and just use some plain old river rock. That will look pretty good with the coloration I have going in my tank!

thanks, I feel more confident now about using these type of lava rocks in my aquarium, the thing I like is that they are much smaller and can fill holes easily
