I was browsing through the want ads and saw someone had posted a cedar tree log for sale. I had not thought of using something like that for my tank. Other than soaking in water for a few days, is there anything else I need to do to prepare a fallen cedar chunk for my tank? Is there any way to make it sink other than connecting it to slate? what type of adhesive is safe to use?thanks

what about a few nice river rocks. I have a decent sized creek in my yard and was thinking about getting a rock or two and making a small cave for my chichlid tank. I think they would like another spot to relax. Are regular rocks ok for aquariums, or does something special need to be done to treat them?

Most people would love to have a creek in their yard to get rocks from! Just boil them first and clean them really good and they'll be OK.

great news! Thanks for the help! I am probably going to replace the centerpiece of my tank (plastic "rock" with a few holes that are quickly becoming too small for my fish) with a few of the nice looking rocks.

cedar is fine as long as it is well seasoned. If its a few years old and dry it probably has very little to no sap/resins left in it. tannins are another story.
cedar is found in a lot of swamps and it doesnt kill the fish there.
