Cherry Barbs...

Are Cherry Barbs generally aggressive??? I added 6 Cherry Barbs awhile back and didn't have any trouble between them and my other fish....But, today I brought home 4 guppies and 2 swordtails...one of the guppies was a gorgeous male, but the Cherry Barbs instantly attacked him, all 6 of them...they didn't bother the females or the swordtails, just the male guppy....I removed him and put him in my fry tank, but I don't think he'll make it....What would cause this??? I love my guppies and will eventually make the 29g a guppy tank, only, but in the meantime I don't need Cherry Barbs killing them.....:confused:

Those long fins might be too tempting to ignore, especially for barbs and any other known fin-nippers. I wouldn't put anything with well-bred, enlarged fins in a tank with any barb, puffer, insecure male betta, et cetera.

i have had one cherry barb for almost a year and he has his own territory...he chases tiger barbs, Redtailed black sharks kribs everything. its really weird i thought the others mite chase him but no!! hes psycho!

I bought 4, the guy at the fish store said they are good cyclers. I have seen one in the tank that is moderately agressive. They arent supposed to be but its a territorial thing. Cherry Barbs are used to Plant enviorments which they can Hide. I myself have only 2 ornaments in my 10GL fish tank and one fake plant. They all get along except for the smallest. I think he messes with the others because of "food time". When food falls tothe bottom and he finds a area with alot of it. He always seems to guard it and eat from it. So its not that they are agressive, They just need space, hiding grounds and supplemental food.

I have had tanks with a combination of barbs. Right now I have a 5.5 gallon tank with a tiger barb a cherry and a gold. I have had barbs for about two years. ANyways, the only barb that I notice some agression from is the tiger barb, however they are known for that. Through my extensive research online of all types of barbs, cherries are the least likely to be fin nippers. Its usually the tiger, albino and green tiger barbs that do like to nip But I am biased,I have only kept barbs in a species tank, never a community tank so I guess it depends on the barbs own personality.:confused:

How about putting angels and tiger barbs together? My angels have long fin but they are much larger than the barbs. I have 6 barbs in a 29g but I plan to add some angels and gourmes to the tank eventually. Seeing any problems?

I would not suggest tigers and angels in the same tank. too much aggresion. I have black ruby barbs and angels and that works ok because the rubys are not very aggressive and just big enough to avoid being eaten.

Well my cherry barbs attacked the male guppy with a vengence...not just one of the cherry barbs, but all of them....But, they don't bother my existing male guppy nor my angels or any of the other fish....They must have been jealous of him for being so pretty....

Geez, I think two of my guppy females are about to explode, I haven't seen guppies this big....I wish I could raise them all, the LFS said they would buy them....3 of the cherry barbs look like they are about to pop also....but my swordtails have never looked prego....who knows....very fertile tank, LOL....
