Sexing guppy fry

To answer your question, the males fin near their anal area, is like longer and more protruding. The females is shorter and more hidden.

it takes awhile for you to be able to tell male from female. At first they all look the same for a couple of weeks. You'll begin to notice some of them will develope a longer pointy anal fin...and others will have a fan shaped anal fin ( the fin on the bottom just in front of the tail)

The pointy anal fins are males....female's are fan shaped...

Thanx for clearing that up. :)

You will be able to make positive identification of males and females at 4-6 weeks...colors and finnage will become apparent, and gonopodiums will form...

The serious guppy breeders want to segregate the males and females as early as possible. Since many livebearers can store sperm and continue to have young for months and months after one breeding, if you want to selectively breed them, you have to do that.

I can tell on mine usually at 2 weeks. I look for the gravid spot on the females. Its really tiny, but definately there when they are little. Haven't made a mistake yet. *crosses fingers* lol.
