So I have a brand new 30g hex aquarium that I will not be able to set up until I make it to school in a few weeks. I've been researching, but still unclear on some things. I will try to make this as easy as possible for those kind enough to reply.
Equipment
Ocenic Systems 30g ~2ft tall hex incl. 14w florescent bulb
Rena Cal Top Light Excel 150w Heater
Thermometer Strip
AquaClear Powerhead 175gph
Marineland Penguin Biowheel 150gph
API Stress Zyme
Test Kit for Ammonia, High Range pH, pH, Nitrate, Nitrite.
For setting up, do I need a decomposing object? I've had mixed results on this. Bacteria need the ammonia to eat on. Please keep in mind I will be in a college dorm room with a roomie that won't appreciate anything too raunchy. Is my expectation of a week, (based on bf's experience and my reading), to get this ready for fish realistic?
When I do finally have this thing cycled, what would be a safe number of guppies for the tank? I have 5 adult guppies now (3f, 2m), and 20-30 of fry in a separate tank . I plan on giving away, or trading to LFS for credit, most but want to save my favorites, especially females. I've also been considering a small group of Ottos to help with clean up in the adult tank. Good idea or no? The pH, temperture and the dH ranges overlap for them, from the research I've done.
I've also been considering some live plants, maybe java fern and/or moss. Something to give shelter to those batches that aren't caught in the breeding net as well as give a little more natural look. I have 30lbs of black gravel to use as substrate.
I've become obsessed and looking to the wisdom of forums rather than rely on the website articles. :bowing: :read:
I promise to try not to be a :troll:
