View Full Version : Does anybody eat their fish's food?

I was wondering if I was the only one.
Anyhow, I was seeing this pet shop and they kept their cichlids real nice and big. Well I asked them what type of food they fed them and he pointed me to their fish store's brand flake food. I was surprised it was store brand, never thought much about them, but the fish in this fish store look real good so I got it. Something about that food hooked me in, maybe it was the made from scratch flake food, or fish food in it's simplest form. The container was just simply a clear plastic container with the fish store's name written in with a sharpei. It's like when you buy something from a farmer and they have those simple containers of honey or something, it tastes better than the commercial stuff. Well anyhow I couldn't help but taste some of the flake food and it actually tasted pretty good.
So am the only one that's done this, or have you guys done the same?

Yea, I tried it before...A fish store gave me a can of shrimp for free because I am a regular customer there...They were nice folks..Well, it looked good, the shrimp so I tasted one..Found out, it did not taste too good and it was very salty..About 2 hours later, my throat got really dry and it was because of the fish food..
I tried Wardlys flake food also..That tasted okay and if I was like a starving man who did not eat for weeks, I would probably eat that, lol..
Dam, it is like I am eating their food...lol

They wrote on the container with a sharpei? I wonder how you do that? After I read this I tried writing with my Basset Hound and he didnt seem to apprieciate it too much. Actually got really really mad. I wonder if it is only sharpeis' you can write with. And no, I have never tried my fishes food, it smells like hell, and I decided that I should stick to oats and hay.

haha! Only if I wanted to be the first to die from fish food related allergies. Man, I touched my eye once after feeding blood-worms, Bam! My whole eye swelled up and itched like hell.

This is suppose to be a light hearted thread about eating fish food..I am pretty sure other people wondered about the taste of flake food for being curious..That is why I ate very little of the food because I was curious..You think no one is curious on how fish food taste like? As a matter of fact, maybe you all think that no one is curious about anything, period!
Then it came to personal attacks, typical of aquariacental..I been here since 1998 and the mods told me that they lost a lot of information back in 2000 and that is why I could not log in..Same old aquairacental, trolls and personal attacks for a light hearted thread like this one!!
I have a question for you trolls? Do you enjoy the fish keeping hobby? I really do not think so based on your responses..Yea, action do speak lounder than words..

To be honest, never have had the wild urge to taste my fishies food!
Why would one want to?
To "Be at one" with your fishie friend or that sort of Zen nonsense?
I'll stick with Human Food, thank you very much!

Watermelon no one made any personal attacks as far as I can tell this was a lighthearted thread untill you made an attack. Have a sense of humor and cill out. If anyone is acting like a troll its the person doing all the yelling. What did you think everyone would just be like oh yea I tried it? If you only want to here one answer to a question then only ask yourself.

I got riddiculed for being curious on how fish food taste like! That is not an attack? And how about me eating just fish food only and I should try frozen blood worms/dog food? Yea, in real life, if a person said that to your face about eating dog food and frozen blood worms what the heck would you do! You probably would not see that as an attack? The thread is not light hearted after the trolls took over..And the troll is not me..I just fed them..

Woah.....Ive read and reread everything on this thread and saw nothing even remotely close to an attack on watermelon. I figured someone made some assanine comment that was removed by a mod, so I missed something, but it doesnt seem like it now. W-melon, I think you should chill a bit and take the posts as they were typed: lighthearted comments on the practice of eating fish food. So what if some people think its gross? You said yourself it wasnt the best. And please dont take what Ive just written as an attack. When I say "you should" I dont mean that Im demanding you to chill or that Im going to force you to chill. Its just some advice.
No, I havent tried my fishes food, but I have been tempted to taste it! If you smell it right, it seems like it might be worth trying. And as for eating my dogs food, my dog is fed people-grade raw meat, so you bet Id join her in a meal! Id cook it first for myself, of course.

Nope, I wouldnt. Id look at them a bit strange, probably laugh, especially if I had just made a comment about eating fish food myself.... Really, Id judge it by context clues in said conversation. Food issues are pretty sensitive topics to some people though, and its important to be polite.
And by the way, you arent even the OP here, so why are you assuming everyone is making fun of you, not that they are?

I personally like to season my dog food with just a pinch of fish flakes. I use the frozen blood worm cubes as ice cubes in my glass of tank water. Then, as a pallet cleanser before my dessert of a rawhide chew, I eat a can of cat food. I only eat this meal on Sunday nights as a special way to welcome in the start of yet another week of work.

You're being over-sensitive. Those comments weren't meant as an attack, only as a furthering of your half-joking thread. Lighten up! Sheesh.

The problem with online forums is that you can't tell when someone is being sarcastic. I don't think the remarks were meant to be mean, but I can see why watermelon might think they were.
In real life, you can tell when a person is making a friendly joke (as opposed to a mean one) by their tone of voice, facial expression, etc. Online, however, you can't. Thats what :)s are for.

Nope. Just an idea that ran through my head that gave me a chuckle. If I was going to attack w-melon I'd do it directly. I think there's just a misinterpretation of the intentions of the posters on his part. Not a big deal. It's easy to do when you only have text to go by. But, no, no attack meant.

Wow.
I've never been tempted to try fish food. The smell kind of turns my stomach a bit. Back in the days of my wee little youth..(ok like 15 years ago) I had tried dog food. It wasn't disgusting, but surely not something I'd munch on if I ran out of chips.

Where did I say that you don't eat Human food?
I was stating an opinion that I would stick to Human food as I had no desire to taste fish food (I'm not that curious!)

I will admit that I did try the Omega One Veggie Flakes (they do have fish in them) and it smelled really fresh and appetizing! I'd emailed Omega One and gotten information about their products, how they harvest (they are very "green") and use whole fish and other types of "seafood", creating the best product they can. They didn't taste "off" or stale, but just as I expected a fresh, quality fish food to. Don't check out the dog or cat food, but I have taste-tested my horses' grain and fresh hay!! Wouldn't eat any on a steady basis, but when I think of what's in bologna, hot dogs, and alot of other processed foods . . . . blech! :D

On Fear Factor and Survivor, two tv reality-based shows, people eat live insects and other things which are absolutey disgusting to most of us; yet since money is on the line, these folks purposefully choke them down (excuse me, bleeeewwwghhh); fish eat them, too.
In some countries, it's one of the few protein sources humans have. And they scarf 'em down with gusto. Grubs, beetles, ants, winged types like grasshoppers, whatever. So, think about the world outside your own little boxes and realize that some of us do like to check out the quality of our pets' foods--to a limit. And one of the most endearing human traits is curiosity (it has other qualities, too, not to be explored here). :D

Yeah, I don't think my stomach could handle a steady helping of fish food, I'm not saying I can. Only so much a human belly can hold in. But I do try some of it when it's a brand new food, just to see how it tastes.

It's never occurred to me to try fish food. I did try my dog's Milkbones, though. pretty tasteless and plain. Cat food is sour.
I would never eat brine shrimp or worms either. I saw a guy on The Man Show chug a mug full of live brine shrimp and I almost puked. I wonder if the water was all salty, blagh.

:rant2: An aside. . . .
***By the way, making fun of Jay's misspelling of the marker "sharpie" as the dog "sharpei" was kinda snooty considering the common careless spelling mistakes made in forums (notice, PLURAL). No, I'm not the spelling police or any other policing force; it's just so ridiculous to see people spell "lose" as in "I lost my fish"--"I lose water through evaporation"--but it's often spelled LOOSE. Loose is when your clothes are baggy, a girl will go out with any body, how loose did you leave the lid on the jar of mayonnaise? Why don't people make fun of that?
Or punctuation--why does it matter? Because it shows that we care, and aren't brainless thugs. Object/words ending in "S" don't always have apostrophes. And there are particular placements for those apostrophes. Man, the education that people get in other countries, and the fact that they are used properly, is embarassing. We are a lazy nation in alot of ways.
[COLOR=Blue]***disclaimer: this is a generalization, as there never are all people doing something at any time, there are educated people in the USA who utilize their learning, and I'm not trying to belittle, slam, put down, or hurt the self-esteem of any of our dear readers.[/COLOR :thud:
[btw, I believe dog and cat food, canned and dry, has more insect and rodent feces partilculates per million than other foods. Although, did you ever wonder how those little bugs got into the flour container, cornmeal, and other grains? The eggs were already there.]

Ok. This is how it is. I was not making fun of anyone. It was a simple play on words. All done in jest, it seems that some individuals need to toughen up. This is an internet forum. Gosh, saying that as Americans we are lazy is an astute observation. Not only are Americans getting lazy, but we are getting overly sensitive. Most Americans are all about themselves, and turn issues that are not about them into personal issues. People think everyone owes them something.
HERE IS A HINT, A LITTLE TIDBIT THAT WILL HELP YOU ALONG IN LIFE:
GROW UP!! GET OVER YOURSELF!!
LEARN TO TAKE A JOKE!
LEARN TO LAUGH AT YOURSELF!!
LIFE IS NOT THAT SERIOUS.
One last note, I did notice that the person who started this thread isnt on here whining because i had a little fun with it.

My vet husband likes to try out new cat food & medicine before recommending them to clients, especially the 'all natural' cat food. He likes to say, "Oh, your cat will like it. It tastes just like banana, or tuna or bubble gum" or "This is all natural and it tastes great, I can snack on it". Yes, everybody makes fun of him. He just shrugs and goes on his merry way. :)
I think the dried brine shrimp smells good. It tempts me but I ain't brave enuff to try it. ;)

OK, The smell makes me gag, and this thread is making me laugh. LOL Never "on purpose" have I eaten it. Cat or dog food either. (Although when my oldest was 2 we had to hide the cat and dog food or we'd find her munching away on it. hehe) I have tried the Omelene we fed the horse. Oats covered in Molasses. Good stuff.
I have taste-tested my horses' grain
Yep, me too....lol....the sweet molasses feed is actuallly pretty good, I've also tried a handful of some type of pellet grain, which wasn't bad..but not as good as the sweet feed :D

I'll admit I used to eat milkbones.. all the time, as a kid. Then, when I learned to read, I must have said something along the lines of, 'mommy, whats a chicken by-products?' I stopped eating 'em. :)
I have eaten my parrots food, when I buy them their human-grade bags of dried fruits/nuts and beans. Mmm..
I've been a vegetarian now for almost 14 years so I don't think I'll be tasting my fish food anytime soon. I do smell it though :D
