Can a school of Danios be mixed? I have 2 zebras that I got on the advice of the lfs even though I'm not real fond of them. They are currently in a 10G cycling with 2 white clouds. I've learned that they really should be in a school of at least 5. Once the tank is cycled I plan on getting 3 more of each type of fish to have 2 schools. Just wondering if I can get a different type of Danio to mix with the zebras to make a school. I appreciate any input!

yes you can get the different danios. the std ones will be outswimming the fancy ,but they get along okay.

The different species of danios will get along and probably school together, but they wouldn't nessisarily(spelling?) prefer it, espescially since you don't have a school of the zebra danios yet. However, the long fin and standard danios are the same species, as well as the genetically altered "glo-fish" that was suggested to you in another thread, so you should have no problem mixing them.

Hi there,

I'm new to this board and really enjoy reading posts for advice. Now, I do have Giant Danios and can put my couple cents in here. :)

I bought 3 Danios (about 3-4" in length) for my 90 gallon tank a couple of months ago. When I was picking them out, I was not thinking that size of these Danios will matter... Well, unfortunately it did. They were relatively the same size but the slightly larder Danio was very dominant and territorial. He "ruled" the tank and sent the smallest Danio into a corner - sort of put him in his place. As soon as small Danio would try to come out, he would chase the poor guy back into his place, where he would just "float-still". After a couple of weeks, the smallest Danio lost a lot of weight from the lack of movement and died... I was afraid that the large guy would start picking on the other Danio and was ready to bring them back to the store, but they seem to be fine.

Also, when I had 3 of them and would come close to the tank, they would get together in a small group and swim together like they were best friends. Then as soon as I would leave, back to chasing! Weird behaviour... I'm not sure if that's their typical behaviour or I've got a bully in my tank. But it's definitely something to keep in mind.

Hope this helps. :)

I have a mix of regular zebra danios, long-finned, long-finned blue, and albino and they shoal very well together. They do all the normal breeding behavior and displaying regardless of color and finnage. The lone albino seems to rule the roost though. Keep in mind that danios are not great schoolers like some of the tertras would be. Danios tend to maintain a loose group if there are no "threats" present in the tank.
