Just came home to notice all kinds of tiny white creatures living in my 120. What a day. :( They are too small to take a pic of. Should I proceed with the water change I was going to do tonight? Any idea what I should treat the tank with? HELP!!!!

Edit: most seem to be living on the glass.

Try a search for planaria. Frequent water changes and a good gravel vac is the way to go. What is your current water change schedule? Have you been overfeeding at all?

White spots seem to be popping up a lot....is there a common tie? Anyone using SF bay brand frozen bloodworms and having white spots by chance?

No live plants added and no new fish added. I did recently buy a GT but he is in a 20 gal QT tank for the time being. I recently added some driftwood but surely they weren't dormant on that or anything. I've been feeding the same package of beefheart for a month now and no signs of this. It does not seem to be affecting the fish but I want it GONE!!!

I'm doing a 50% water change now with a very good gravel sweep. BUT they are still ALL OVER the walls. GRRRR! I'm going to my LFS tomorrow and hopefully get a cure for this.

Edit: I do 50% water changes every two weeks.

Ok I am not completely stressed. :( They don't appear to be on my fish or even bothering them but that doesn't mean they are not.

you've probably got a case of Planaria. DO NOT use any drugs. these 'worms' are harmless to your fish, plants and anything else you've got in the tank. they simply represent a case of overfeeding and insufficient gravel vacuuming.

these "Flatworms" are unsegmented and bilaterally symmetrical. they typically appear as small white "worms" seen crawling all over the glass and ornaments, especially at night.

Planaria commonly show up in tanks with an excess of food and most are introduced to an aquarium from other aquaria with live foods like black worms, live plants, or anything else moved from an active aquarium that has them. If a lot of residual food is left in a tank, including dead and dying fish, snails, other animals, and plants, then a few planaria may divide into hundreds very quickly. they usually reproduce by asexual fission.

If a tank is found to have planaria, they can be controlled by a good vacuuming of the gravel and better tank maintenance.

to remove planaria from a more heavily infested tank:

1. Set out bait like meat in a mesh bag. remove the bait a few hours after the lights go out on the tank. it should be covered with planaria. throw away and repeat until the population goes down.

2. add planaria eating fish to the tank. such species include the paradise fish, betta, pelvicachromis pulcher and many species of gourami

3. vacuum the gravel very well and do a 50% water change. often, planaria proliferate when the tank is too dirty. this will remove not only some planaria but their food source as well.

4. reduce the foods added to the tank. planaria often proliferate if too much excess food is provided.

This is very interesting. I do bi-weekly 50% water changes and never thought that I over feed. I feed once a day and they eat it all up in under 3 - 5 minutes. I've never had this problem before and trust me I never took care of my past tanks like I have this one. I think that's why I'm pretty discouraged about this. I finally feel like I'm doing everything right and then this happens. :( If I add a gourami to my tank will he be alright with my fish? Check sig. It would of course be only a temp thing for him.

Last question. Where the heck did they come from?

I'm pretty discouraged
no need to be. see the size of those planaria? you can see that it wouldn't take much extra food to keep them happy. extra gravel vaccuming will get rid of even that little bit of extra food that planaria need to thrive and in turn you'll soon be rid of them.

Thanks for the encouragement. I was thinking about getting a three spot gourami to eat them but I think I'll doa vacum every night until they are gone. If this doesn't work I may get on. Thing is I would have to buy one and then put him in the QT tank for a while, THEn put him in my tank. By the time I do all that they may be gone by just doing a vacum. We'll see.....
