it wont be for a while but when we redo the house i want to add a pond. i was thinking of a topical pond. i live in so cali. it doesnt get to hot and it doesnt get to cold. i have a lot of room to work with but i was thinking how deep can i go? i see some ponds that are a foot or two deep but i was thinking deeper. i am just not sure how deep. its something that if its done i am going to do it my self. anything i should know in the planning stages?

Herons

If you have large herons/egrets in your area, it will only be a matter of time before they discover your pond. 4 feet in depth is recomended to foil great blue herons and great egrets. If your water is shallow, they can decimate a pond in short order. The entire pond doesn't need to be that deep, just enough area to provide a deep water refuge for the fish. After one or two heron visits, the fish catch on quickly.

Well some ponders who have the larger Koi have ponds as deep as 10 feet. You have to have some serious pumps and filters if you go that deep. It just depends on what you want and can afford to build and maintain.

yeah, I would say 3-4 feet is probably best, the very best being 4 feet. You can make it where you have a step all the way around the edges of the pond at 3 feet and maybe an island in the middle somewhere and all else to be 4 feet deep. Your options are wide open, why not go for the gusto.
