Hey - I just got my cave for my powder blue gourami. I've been trying to determine #1 - is he sick (just treated the tank and him for internal parasites) and #2 if he is happy.

He was slow to come out to eat but he did come out and eat a little and then he looked around the gravel for some food (which is typical for him for some reason), then right back into the cave. Now, I've only had the cave 2 days and this is the first he is really using it.

Is it normal for some fish to just hang out in there? BTW - he seems almost a brighter blue after the parasite treatment and the introduction of the cave. That's a happy sign, right?

Thanks!

BTW - my guppies seem really happy that the gourami is tucked away some where - they are swimming all over playing.

i dont know about gouramis, but i have heard that plecos are happy if they hide, or something like that. That if your pleco is happy you'll never see him in the tank. i dunno if someone could back me up on that. i have a blue dwarf gourami who use to always hide i use to have to search all the time then as he got use to the tank he comes out now.

Thanks woofgrrmeow. I hope you are right! Anyone else with any thoughts?

how long have you had the gourami? If he's not new, then maybe he's just so happy to have a cave that he's staking out his territory. From what I understand, gouramis are not the kind of fish to hide constantly (like bottom feeders are apt to). With most water column species (gouramis, guppies, etc.), I tend to think that constant hiding is a sign of stress. I'd say give it another few days, especially after the parasite treatment and all, and hopefully he'll settle down.

I hate to say it but this morning the gourami now looks swollen!! I hate trying to be a fish Dr!! I think I am just going to return him.

He also didn't really eat this morning - just kind of picked at the food.
