In refrence to the sig, would the proposed number of c. loaches be appropriate for the settings? i have heard they school with cories. Also, if it is too much, i have no problems taking the number of loaches down or out all together. Does anyone think they might make short work of the teras?

3 clowns in a 55 would be OK for about 2 years. Once they reach 6 inches they should be rehoused in a 90 gallon aquarium or larger. My clowns like to socialize with all my fish...as they grow larger this tends to frighten the other fish though. By the time the clowns are large enough to consider tetras a food source they should already be in a new home.
My clowns are about to get a new home (90 gallon) and four more clown loach friends.

is there any other commonly found loach that would work; i'm not the biggest fan of growout and the tetras are an important factor.
A nice shoal of skunk loaches would look good or maybe some kuhli's.

I have 6 clowns in my 75 gal. they range from about 4 to 7+ inches. I also have a school of cardinal tetras and 5 large SAEs in this tank. The clowns do not bother anybody. This tank has housed the clowns for about 4 years now.
I think it is best not to keep other bottom dwellers - I have had sterbai corys and bn plecos in the tank at various time and suffered losses. I don't think the clowns so much attacked these fish as much as they "bulldozed" or sat on them. Clowns have a tendency to go where they want when they want if it doesn't involve bigger fish. The tetras, being open water water swimmers, do not spend time where the clowns might damage them.

Awesome...Do you have any pics?

From what I have been told clown loaches will not try to eat tank mates till they reach sexual maturity (8-12").

I have heard Raphs make good tank mates for loaches, as when the loaches try to bully them, Raphs bully back. Not agressive, but most people who keep them together, like the fact that Raphs don't let loaches take over their caves and such.

I have 7 clowns in a 180g, and have had no bully issues. It may be a matter of floor space more than actual bullying....
I have ,however, seen them loach pile Rufus, the 17 inch pleco. He doesn't seem to mind. Go figure.
loaches r cool

Zebra's (botia striata) are a better choice for a smaller tank I think... they only get a few inches long and look pretty cool.
