Just wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with the stainless steel heaters with the thermostat on the power cable rather then attached directly to the heater.

I am really interested in using 2 of these with the 55 I will be setting up but am curious if there are any drawbacks.

(already did a search and didn't find anything bad about them but want to check anyway)

Can you post a link to the heater you are looking at? Thanks.

Though not explicit, it suggests that there is a seperate sensor, that comes off the heater (notice the wire) that goes to it. This sensor detects the temp and acctuates the heater. The controller box is outside and on the wall.

It does not give a brand name. For the most part there is positive review on these heaters. However, if it is a "Won" heater, forget it! I had the "Won" heater and it heated my tank to 110 degrees and killed everything in the tank even though it was set at 86 degrees for my discus.

wow no way.... 1/2 of my setup are on "Won bro" heater with LCD... i been using them for few years now... i have no problem with them...

That "Won" heater killed four good size discus, three panda cories, and all of the live plants in a fully planted aquarium. I tried to salvage what I could from the plants but the damage had been done and they could not recover. Basically I had to start over again because my tank had crashed killing everything. I was completely devastated and it took a while to pick myself back up and recreate what I once had. Believe me that tank was beautiful with all the live plants and the absolutely beautiful discus in there. Since then I have four more discus that I waited over two months to get from the breeder. I have replanted the aquarium and I have started the live plants again. It will take awhile for the plants to all grow in again.

As far as the "Won" heaters are concerned, I don't trust them anymore. I do have a "Won" heater in my 125 gallon cichlid tank that has been going strong for almost four years to date without a problem. I watch it constantly after what happened to my planted discus tank. From what I understand something has changed with thier product and the heaters that are affected were sold in the last year. If you have a "Won" heater, I would use it with extreme caution. I have not heard of this happening with any other heaters that have the controls on the outside of the tank.
