Hello All:

I just purchased a used 75 gallon tank to begin a freshwater aquarium. Followed advice shown on this forum to get a larger tank to start with.

The lady that sold it to me had used in as a saltwater tank. She has a sump she used with it, and I wondered whether I should purchase it ($50) or buy something new for filteration. I've not used a sump before, but she showed me the area that holds charcoal, as well as the area that held a large quantity of bio-balls. She mentioned if I bought a new sump it would be around $150.

It included a pump and two corner mounted apparatus that (I think) draw the water out to the sump and pump it back into the other corner unit.

Other than cleaning the tank, do I need to do anything else to prepare it for a freshwater environment?

Thanks for whatever guidance you can give.

sumps are super filters.I don't use charcoal but I use bioballs.

one thing..it takes time for the sump to become the super filter.

on the downside..they don;t seem to be the 'best' in a planted environment as the sump tends to allow for great O2 mixing but also increases potential CO2 off gassing.

I would buy the sump, any filter for that 75 is gonna cost more than $50. Like star said they are super filters. So you're getting the tank/tubing/media/pump for $50? Thats a good price.
