Can someone please help me?
Just when i thought i had a handle on understanding plecos, more conflicting information was thrown onto my beliefs. i think i understand their diets, but as to their size and minimum tank, i am deeply confused. Any help?

there are all types of different plecos that you can look into getting as well. Commons are the big daddy's of plecos but there are many that stay small... check Plant Catfish. Look in their CATelog and check under common names or L-numbers.

Which pleco are you talking about? There are so many plecos you can not just say this will work. Some plecos need strong currents, some need driftwood, some are carnivores, some are herbivores the list goes on and on. If you tell us which pleco your interested in maore detailed information can be given.

Correct...300+ species to date, and new ones each year...each with their own requirements.

here we go again

Also some of the plecs on that species profile aren't even h. plecostomus - some are liposarcus pardalis (I have one), they tend to reach about 13" SL. a little larger if you include the tail. I actually have an h. p. as well - they should reach about 12" give or take, not 18". Gibbiceps I could easily believe 18" though!

Planet Catfish is definitely the place to look.
