If I use aquarium salt, do I need to remove the carbon filter? I don't forsee any problems keeping it in, but want to make sure.

No, if you choose to use salt, no need to remove carbon.

Some folks may argue you need to use neither - but its late, so I will simply leave it at that

I would naturally be curious to know what the salt is being used for.

No, certain fish don't like salt. Fish are either fresh water, brackish water, or marine. In no case does this involve 'a bit of salt'. Brackish and marine water contains much more than just NaCl, and fresh has none.

If you are using R.O. or D.I. water salt is good to add needed minerals to the tank. I also believe it helps keep down bacterial and fungal infections. If your water is liquid rock like mine, then there really isn't much of a need to add it.

Almost any electrolyte is preferable to sodium. A splash of hard tapwater is all that's needed to make distilled water okay for softwater fishes.

Getting us to buy electrolytes in a jar is a brilliant coup of marketing!
