this is a little sad, but moving. you guys need to hear this. I just thought this was very well written so I wanted to share it with you guys.......
In 1997, on a balmy still September night in the tranquil Australian bushland of the Northern Territories Tomkinson River (near the township of Maningrida), a gorgeous 16-year-old girl named Annie is alerted to the dull mechanical thud of a vehicle heading her way. Feeling nervous and a little insecure, Annie quietly slips into her home and listens.
The noise of the oncoming vehicle is piercing and threatening in her normally quiet peaceful harmonious Aussie bush home. It keeps coming louder and louder, closer and closer. She waits and listens anxiously. Her nerves and adrenaline heighten to a point where she cant take it any longer. She has to look. As she takes a peek, a bright spot light temporarily blinds her. Completely confused and dazed shes not sure what to do. Before she can react, a searing pain strikes her in the neck as two long sharp barbs of steel penetrate deep into her flesh. She reels in pain back into the security and familiarity of her home. Tearing at the barbs deep in her neck, she feels the strain of a cord running from the barbs to the vehicle and male voices of excitement.
Four desperate adult men pull at the cord as they shout, "We got her. We got her. Hang on to her. Keep the strain on!" They tug on the cord knowingly. Those men know she cant get the barbs out and its just a matter of wearing her down and dragging her to them. Struggling and resisting with all her might, the poor helpless girl is dragged to what she fears is certain torture and death. Exhausted, breathless, totally blinded by a spotlight thats right in her eyes, she is so weak she can hardly move, so starved for energy and air shes virtually frozen in fear and pain. Being dragged by the neck from her home is so traumatic; she doesnt feel the noose go around her head.
Exhilarated by the hunt, revelling in the thrill of the chase and amused by the fight of their prey, totally oblivious to her pain and fear and without remorse, the men mercilessly pull her into the vehicle. They gaffer tape her legs together; tie her arms together behind her back; tape her eyes shut and have her mouth gagged. Very, very happy with their prey, they head for their hideout. The most beautiful of girls is bound so tight that she goes from numb to excruciating pain, yet unable to utter a sound. Almost totally incoherent from cramps and searing pain, she hears the men shout, "Theres another one. Lets get her!" Whack they drive in the barbs and reel another in. Shes even younger and barely an adolescent, easily manhandled, bound and thrown in the vehicle.
'Imagine poor little Annie's nightmare and torment as she lies in pain and fear when they pull up.' The men manhandle her to a dusty old shed; throw her on the ground and mill around smoking and laughing for what seems like hours. Then she hears it! Sssskkk a rifle is loaded and cocked. Annie feels the cold steel of the barrel touching her head. "No not there, you have to shoot them here one man exclaims." "Here?" the other man questions. "Yeah. Thats it, now angle it up towards her brain." "Yeah, thats it" he directs. BOOM! Her torture and torment is finally over but while shes still twitching, they skin her.
No one mourned the death of Annie. No one will shed a tear at her passing or even remember her. No one cares that Annie died so horrifically because Annie was a crocodile.

I've heard this before, but it's even sadder now that Steve has died too...he was a great man, pushed the envelop at times, but he brought a lot of wildlife issues to public attention. Very sad...

thats so sad, :( it made me cry.i love all creatures,a muskrat(about 2 ft)attacked my cat defending her babies,my cat(witch was about 7 mos old)was hurt very badly and died before we got to the vet.the next day when i was burying my kitten i saw the same rat in a trap(the kind that close when the animal goes in)and a man with a pellet gun was comeing over,i told him that i that if he hurt that rat i was going to call the cops(its illigal to kill muskrats).he said that he saw this rat attack a young cat and that the cat was probably dead.i said that i didnt care,i saw her tiny babies watching thier mom fighting to get out of the trap i let her out with difficulty because she was trying to bite me the whole time.but when she got out she just looked at me then ran to her babies.the man thought i was crazy when i told him that it was my cat,the rat is still living in front of my house at the water with a new litter of babies that i saved during ernesto.she was just scared,it's the same if you were to kill a dog that were attacking your children.

i'm sorry to rant, but please don't quote the entire original post, especially if it's that long. just select the parts you like, and delete the rest. I've seen people quote entire articles here, only to add two sentences of their own, and it's just annoying. Sorry, bettagurl, I have nothign against you, I just wanted to point that out. Rant over.

steve irwin died?!?!?  he was one of my heros..... he's one of the reasons i'm so fervently interested in biology.... I feel like I lost an old friend.... what did he die of? he wasn't that old, so somethnig must have gone wrong. and betta gurl... i'm the same way. once in florida, there was a male giant water bug, stranded on land trying to protect his eggs. barely alive, I was trying to find some way to get him back to the water without touching him (they can give severe bites) i went home and got a net, and when I came back, someone had just squished him. I cried. yes, just some old bug had died. but he was just trying to protect his eggs, and he was outside and not even bothering anyone.I guess some people just don't care...

i hate how cruel some people are:mad:
i get so mad when my parents cook crabs(if you dont know how they are cooked, thier steamed alive)i go out at night and empty the crab pots of the crabs and bait,my parents also think im crazy because im vegitarian.i went off on this lady and her kids at the park because she was letting them hurt this little blue skink, after i grabbed him a put him far back in the woods i asked her why she let them do that, she said that it doesnt matter is one is hurt badly or dies because there are so many lizards.thats when i exploded, then her oldest kid said that they didnt care if he was going to die because they werent tree huggers.i went to the park rangers and told them what happened, and they threw her out:)im normally a sweet person, but never do anything to hurt animals,i almost killed my bf because he and some friend tore up a goose nest and one of the boys killed thier mom.i tried to save the eggs, but they had been shaken, and i saved a spider from a group of boys that looked capable of murder.i love animals so much. :p:

cool,my whole family thinks im nuts,im not a full vegitarian,i just dont eat meat, and i dont fish,i think hooking something through its face, eye, mouth or anything the hook goes through, then pulling it out of the water so it cant breathe is very cruel:(and hunting, why do people do that?i would understand if thats all you had to eat, but for sport...taking away a life for entertainment.my neighborhood is bad for animals,we had a mass stray cat killing going on a little while ago, there were beaten dead cats everywhere.i found a stray that i had taken care of since it was born dyeing with a broken jaw and skull,he was quietly meowing in pain:sad:i had to carry that dyeing cat a block away and nobody offered help, they said, good less cats.animal control came and put him to sleep to end his misery,im crying while i write this, people are so cruel, they did the same to a three week old kitten, exept they used a pellet gun.i hate people like that.

Just because you hate meat doesn't mean you should yell at people who hunt and fish. We hunt for meant we fish for meat. We cook crabs for food. If we didnt, we might die or have a very crappy diet. We need meat , so whatever it takes, its nature.
