Filtration questions

I'm refurbishing a tank that I have had running for about 6 years. Everyone finally died, so I'm taking out the coral substrate, and starting anew with sand.

I notice by reading several boards that there is no more undersubstrate type of filtration being used...I was running a powerhead sucking from underneath and a whisperclear 200 hanging on the back...

My question is...what am I to use now....my tank is a 20 long...i plan to do FOWLR. I'm pretty sure that little whisperclear isn't enough of a filter for my tank...any suggestions?

all you need is live rock, a good protein skimmer, and lots of water flow via powerheads (at least 10x per hour)

stay away from seaclone and supreme skilter filter---speaking from experience.

Why don't you like seaclone?....I have one & it takes out 1/4 to 1/2 cup of :rant2: a day.......Sue

That's because Seaclones have a horrible reputation. If yours is working for you, that's great. But it's a generally accepted fact that there are far, far better options out there.

I don't mean to highjack the thread, but is a skimmer really necessary? I plan on getting one fairly soon, but I haven't had any problems with my water quality up to this point and everything is thriving...

No, a skimmer is not necessary strictly speaking. Many people run great skimmerless tanks. However, not having a skimmer entails greater maintenance with water changes followed religiously and a resistance to the desire to overstock/overfeed.

Most skimmerless tanks are smaller, nano tanks where frequent water changes are easier.

My Seaclone would pull very light colored skimmate out for about a day--then bubbles would start flowing in the tank and nothing wold rise in the tube. I would adjust it, and simply repeat the process. I was adjusting that stupid flow valve everyother day for about 10 minutes to get about 1/8" of skimmate a week.
I bought an in sump skimmer by proclear, turned it on, and I empty a half cup of what looks like 2 month old coffee every 3 days. There's no adjustments to airflow--only water level and I haven't changed that since I set it up.
But l do agree--if you have one and it works for you---stick with it.

From what I've read if you have any additives or medicines in your tank they can cause the skimmer to malfunction....I assume that would happen with ANY skimmer, not just Seaclone.....I must have gotten one of the few non-lemons because the only problem I had was for the first couple days to 1 week....After that it has worked perfectly....I DO make sure that I really clean it out well when I empty it (not just dumping & putting back in place) Maybe that was the problem???....I feel like I'm really cleaning the tank when I empty all that YUCK out....I was even thinking of getting another one....Is it possible to "over-skim" the tank????
