Treating the Tank

I've been having a problem with velvet on my dwarf gourami--we are on day six of treatment and this morning he is looking a little better.

My question is about doing treatment for external parasites such as velvet and ich. I've read about qt tanks, and I have almost all the stuff I need for one, but it seems to me that if one fish in a tank is showing spots from ich then there are undoubtably many more ich parasites not visible in the tank. Thus it would seem that taking the fish out to treat would not solve the problem, as it would just re-contract it when returned to the tank.

So when I treated Georgie for velvet I treated the whole tank, but I don't know if that was the right thing to do. I also treated the tank Georgie had come from--he'd come with his current tank mates. I just figured if he'd had it in his old tank there would be a good chance of it returning.

My question is--When do you treat the entire tank? When all fish are sick or when there is a contagous illness/parasite that pervades the tank?

You should always treat the whole tank for contagious ailments. QT tanks are for newly purchased fish, where you can keep them in observation and treat that tank if needed [usually it is a much smaller volume than your main tank(s)]. Qtanks can also be used as a hospital for things such as torn up fins/cuts, or other problems you are sure will not contaminate the other fish.

If you have ich on one fish you DEFINITELY need to treat the whole tank. Thankfully, I don't have much experience with most of the other diseases so I will let others comment on that.
