I want a tank with real plants and some fish. When starting a tank, what goes in first the plants or the fish??

First cycle the tank.
Add the plants after the tank is cycled.
When the plants are settled in, add the fish.
Just to chime in I tend to go with plants first also though on at least on one tank I didn't cycle first.

I'm doing a silent cycle on my new 55 gallon tank. This means I have 170 watts of light, tons of stem plants, co2, flourish fert, and daily dose fert. This is ideal for me because I can't add any fish for at least ten days, and then it will be only one fish (george), and the rest will be added slowly. Also I already had all the plants stuffed in a 10 gallon, so setting them all up in the 55 with the lights on it was the ideal solution. If the cycle doesn't take I'll seed it from my other tanks, which shouldn't be a problem.
This isn't what I'd recommend to you though, as it takes a lot of set up. I'd just add the plants towards the end of your cycling and then add the fish once the cycling is complete.
