How bad are giant apple snails in planted tanks? I figure its a no no, but I have a ton of em living in the lake my apartment is on, and thought it would be cool to stick one in my 55, but figure it will shred my annacharis and wisteria.
apparently it only took him a couple years to get that big, too. I think he's adorable, but I think mystery/apple/canas/brig snails will eat live plants if they're not well supplemented with other food. They're also very personable!
Brigs aill not eat plants, canas will. The "giant apple snail" yoiu refer to is likely a canas, and will go through a planted tank like a herd of sheep.
Brigs don't get much over 2" in size that I have ever seen.
Mysteries will not eat plants either. I agree scout, it sounds like you are talking about Canas snails. I breed them and yes, they will mow down your plants VERY quickly. If you keep them well fed on favorite foods they MAY leave your plants alone, however, to keep them well fed, you are looking to the equivalent of 4 zucchinis, 2 LARGE pieces of fresh collard greens, 4 large pieces of kale, and well, you get the picture. These guys are eating machines. Great snails, but they just don't mix in the planted tank.
Mystery snails have almost as much personality (they just aren't as willing to sit on your arm/hand and take food from you) and really fun to watch
Just FYI For everyone, Brigs and mysterery snails (Pomacea bridgesii)
Are the same thing.
The Canas (Pomacea canaliculata ) I referred to is commonly called the giant apple snail despite the fact that both are members of the apple snail family as are quite a few others.
applesnail.nethas pictures of shell structure that will help you identify the different species. It takes a little bit of study to learn how to quickly identify them but I have been pretty consistant at telling the difference since I found that site.
