Mold on driftwood?

I looked in my tank today and saw 3 or four "tufts" of white stuff growing on the underside of my driftwood. It looks more like cotton then any algae I've ever seen. The SAE seemed to enjoy eating it but I wasn't sure if it was safe so using my hands I removed it. It all came off in one piece bot had to be sort of "rolled" off. Also it's only one one piece of the driftwood. Each tuft is no bigger then say a dime. Any clues?

probably an anaerobic fungus. does you r drift wood trap air? did you boil it first? does it sink by itself?
 
Doesn't trap air, I couldn't boil it b/c it was too big but I did buy it from a place that caters to driftwood made specifically for aquariums. It is weighted. Is this fungus harmful?
 
i had a mold growing problem in my tank before. claimed 2 of my BF tetras a while back and grew on a ship ornament and on nothing else. even after scrubbing the ship and soaking it in Melafix and Pimafix, it grew back. then i bleached it, rinshed and scrubbed throughly, it grew back. the spores were probably floating in the water. anyways, then i got some snails and shrimp, and they helped to eat most of the growth. anyways the mold doesn't affect my fish anymore and although it still grows a little, its not as noticeable. i think SAE eating it won't affect it.
 
I had the same thing on my piece, just went away and I didnt lose any fish. Ive seen a lot of posts with the same thing, seems harmless. I didnt boil my piece either cause its too big. Soaked it for 2.5 months in a trash can.
 
You will see this kind fo thing on new driftwood, and I've had it on some of mone. Seems harmless, and I haven't noticed any problems from the fish eating it either.
I did want you did and scrubbed some of it off, and let the fish & snails eat the rest.
