I have had my tank up and running since late June and the floss bag just looks nasty. I have been swishing it in the tank water or treated water but it is just gross.

I've heard so many people say, don't change it until it falls apart. Really??

If I do change it, should I buy a new bag and stuff the old one inside the new one??

Or just leave it alone????

THANKS GUYS AND GALS

Two months is quite a while to have the same cartridge in your filter, after a while the activated carbon in your filter will cease to function and you'll be left with nothing but a worn out piece of cloth. I would invest in a filter that came with a bioscreen, so that you could replace the filter regularly but still keep all of those benificial bacteria in there.

Yep, you don't need a new one until the old one falls apart. When you want to change it just float the new filter in the tank or stuff it in with the old filter. This allows the bacteria to become established.

Edit: Activated carbon doesn't really do anything unless you have tannins in your water or are removing medication. The carbon is only good for about 2 weeks anyway.

As noted on the filter, stuff old into new.

Disagree on carbon, it actually does more, but for most people it is an expense that is not needed and unless of sufficeint volume, as not found in most cartridges, will not amount to much improvement. It ends up being a minor surface area for bacteria growth.

Thanks guys! I am going to get a new one and stuff the old one inside.
