I just bought a new tank...65 gallon(freshwater) that's 36" x 18" x 24". I have read numerous threads about light penetration beyond 18" and that you really need some power to achieve the 2-3 wpg at deeper depths. Can someone shed some light on a couple of options for this tank? Thanks in advance...

Are you trying to grow plants in there? If so, you can always build up places in the back to plant the higher light demanding plants. I've heard that the t5 bulbs can be good, and I've seen some amazing results getting wattage to the bottom of deep tanks with the use of six or so of those bulbs.

Just stick to the higher end of the light scale (eg. if you planning on 2-3 WPG, get 3 WPG or even four WPG) and I'm 99% sure you shouldn't have any problems, however I don't think that's deep enough to severely impact the light reaching the bottom of the tank.
I knew nothing about plants when i started so i tried a T5 fixture.It has a white bulb and a purple bulb.I add plant grow once aweek and i`m having very good sucess growing plants.
