Hey everyone my name is Jona, I am a college student in Laredo, TX. I just recently was brought under the water a month ago. I have been really good about following all the directions and recommendations. So far I think I am doing ok.
I started with a small 5gallon hex tank. My first fish were 2 Guppies, an Angel fish (small), and a Pelco. apparently i didnt cycle my tank correctly and lost my first angel. When Aracis(angel) died I bought my first Blue Gourami, and a Loach Dojo. I then did the stupid thing and kinda crowded my tank. I was at some little shop we have here in town and fell in love with this little power house of fish, so I added another little Blue Gourami, the first day was cool, everybody was fine. But the next day I noticed that everybody in the tank was a bit on edge when I would walk in and out of the area I have the tank in. They calmed down quite a bit after a couple of dayz but it forced me to move a bit quicker on the completion of a new tank.
I guess I got the bug pretty good, cause I went out almost less then 3 wks later and bought a 20 gallon show tank[:)I couldn’t help it it was really cheap:)]. i ve been all excited its been a while since I have found something this enticing to keep up with. i spent a few dayz hand selecting the rocks, and got a 20-40g filter(aqua tech), and some plants.

My current tank.....

i am hoping all will stay well, i am having a bit of trouble getting the amonia down to 0 its been at like 1.0 since the cycle(varies alot), the cycle was a wk long. well guys wish me luck and i am sure u are bound to hear more from me. :dive2:

nice looking tank, but you are way overstocked. a common pleco can grow to over 12 inches. and i am not sure a 20 gallon is large enough for the dragon fish. Rukus, is the same species as your other blue 3 spot gourami, but is more commonly as an Opaline Gourami. I would suggest taking the PLECO back to your LFS, returning the pleco will help lower your bio load, then you should be able to get your amonia down to 0, what are your NITRITES, reading? Common Plecos are huge waste makers (they poo ALLOT!) exchange for store credit and get something like a few (at least 3) Cory Doras.

welcome to the boards, Jona.... first let me say welcome to the site, we hope your stay here is fun and educational and educational and fun. In short, first things first, you have so much going on with your tank. You've already found out a 5 gallon tank is very small and no place for all of those fish... unfortuantely you lost an angel in the mix. The reason you are having a problem with the ammonia is the tank has not cycled yet, unless you added something to push it along extensively. The load you have is quite extensive and is having that impact on the ammonia. The 4 gourami's, that's a bit much for a 20 gallon as it is, I believe the blues can get pretty big. The goby, I believe he needs to be in brackish water in order for him to live healthy and comfortable. The pleco, well that little guy is not suited for anything less than a 75 gallon tank as they create a lot of wastes and may grow anywhere between 14 and 24 inches long. Though 18 is typical in an aquarium environment. Also, I believe the loach is a coldwater fish, so these fish are really not compatible. Each needs different temperatures, and environments.

welcome,

nice looking tank

posting is a great way of getting advice.

regarding the pleco(catfish)..make sure you have the species of pleco(catfish) identified. go back to where you got the pleco(catfish) and try to determine which one it is.

commons( I hate this word since it incorporates several species of pleco's) can get fairly large but there are other specise which may be more suitable for your tank.(rubberlipped, bristlenose, oto..etc) hang in there and keep asking questions

Those blue gouramis will get to be about 4 inches each.
