man - guppies missing scales in my 10g and this morning the darn gourami in the qt has some sort of white slime on him - body fungus and he is not eating!!

I feel like I should just dump everyone and everything and start over! No one is healthy!!

How do I get back to healthy fish and good water??????????

My 10g has been up and running since June but I have been adding various med that may of thrown off the good bacteria

My 5 g has only been running for 3 weeks but I used an extra filter from the 10g.

I really feel like euthanizing the 4 fish and starting over!!! (Which I really don't want to do, just frustrated!! :rant2: )

Please give me some steps to make my tank water and fish healthy.

I just raised water temps my 2 degrees in each tank to 78, I will raise it another degree today.

For both tanks
ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

The stuff on the gourami might not be fungus, it might be extra slime coat--sometimes it appears like fungus. I read that in a book yesterday.

It sounds like you are back to square one with cycling your tanks--if you could get biospira I would put some in to avoid any further tramua.

Sorry things aren't working out--that is discouraging!

Gosh I hope you are right! I can barely see it but it is up by the top of his head. Kind of like mucus. He developed it after I used Melafix to help with healing some missing scales.

With the lack of any nitrates in your water, it looks like you need to cycle again, either by using a seeded filter, gravel, etc., or some other method--I'll let someone else advise you of that. What kind of test kit are you using? Do you think there's a possibility it could be off?

they are all API bought in the last 2 months

Well, I had some kind of disaster in my dwarf 55g tank, when my wee lad emptied this nasty brown stinking gunk out of an artificial tree root. The parameter's were fine, but there was some other unmonitored nasties in there, as well as anearobic bacteria.

I changed 40-50% of the water daily (approx 100 litres a day!) and after a week and a half the fish were back to normal (with only one death). I would follow this daily regime for a similar period.

As stated before, the lack of any nitrates indicates an uncycled tank, however you don't mention whether you have any bogwood/live plants as these can drasticly reduce nitrates. Either way, the daily water changes will assist until you get a nitrate reading. I'm also assuming your following the test kit instructions to the letter as some can give false readings if you don't.

I'd additionally run some activitated carbon in your filter to remove any of the previous meds you've tried, and possibly raise the tank temperature to 82-86 degrees to make sure secondary infections don't take hold. You may want to dose with aquarium salt as well, at 2 tbsp/gallon.

I got a feeling you changed your water too often when you did your cycle.

since I had fish while I cycled - I did change the water a lot. I have heard conflicting things about water changes and cycling. But if my reading are high, I change the water until it is under control.

Part of my problem with doing water changes now it that I feel like I need to medicate the fish - in the 10g they are missing some scales either from fighting each other (which I see them picking on each other all day) or a bacterial infection. Melafix said to do a water change after 7 days.

Anyone else with a plan of action?? Do you guys agree that maybe I should do some daily wc for awhile?

I am following the instructions correctly for the tests and no, no plants or bogwood

THANKS

Have you separated the ones that are fighting each other?

When did the fish start to look sick and when did you start to medicate? If the medication hasn't been working for a while, and if it were my fish, I'd get new carbon like pugwash said, to clean out any old medications and then do 30-50% WC.

However, if you want to continue medicating the fish, make sure to take out the carbon filter. I'd medicate according to the instructions and do a WC every 7 days like they said.

I think it depends on if you're thinking the medication has worked (depending on how long you've tried it already) or not.

Good luck.
