i went to wal-mart today and walked through the fish department(out of habit)and looked in the tiny betta cups,i saw a betta in the dirtiest cup that had severly torn fins,i picked up the cup and another betta shot from the other side and began attacking the other betta!i got a person that worked in the fish area to come, she said that he was in there because they didnt have any more cups!so she put one of the bettas in one of thier empy tanks without getting him used to the different temperatures.the poor baby had barely any fins left, the betta that was doing all the attacking didnt have that much damage...........i try not to even go in there anymore, this is the first time i've been there for about two months.

ugh, that's terrible. That's why everyone on this forum should boycott Walmart fish (not to mention their other products). If someone is tempted to "rescue" their fish, it only feeds the corporate machine.

ive got to agree about that cooperate machine. walmart isnt the best store in the world IMO but people still shop there, and as long as they keep shopping there they will be able to fund their stores and keep all of the parts of it running and fully stocked

I pretty much jumped down the persons throat that put them together, the one betta will probably die,i know that they areent going to treat him and he's damaged so bad.I have to many rescues from everywhere,im going to put at least four up for free soon, just pay shipping and give them a good home.wal-mart makes me soo mad :mad2: i advise everyone who goes in the fish department(in front of the people trying to sell fish)not to buy from wal-mart because thier tanks are disease ridden.

I was thinking about introducing ich to their tanks out of spite, but every fish in the tank already had ich,so there was no one to infect. buying fish there for your tank is like making out with someone with bubonic plague!

I just went to Walmart the other day and they had a whole tank of dead fish with the rest of the fish dying as I watched. I told the guy about the tank and he just laughed and said "yeah, I know". I will never buy fish from Walmart no matter how healthy they look.
It must be the same at every wal-mart. The super wal-mart in my town has dying fish in every tank. There are 4-inch+ oscars in with rams, the ghost shrimp they are trying to sell are being eaten by the fish in the tank with them, there was a goldfish with his eyes eaten out still somehow swimming around (albeit slowly). There is never a worker in the section, no matter what time of day or night. Most of the boxes of tanks and supplies are open, in the wrong section, or pieces are apparently stolen out. Most every shopper I've ever seen when I was walking through is appalled and says something about it to whoever they are with. I'm amazed that someone in some type of power hasn't shut down their fish sales.

Gee, maybe we should just have an "I hate Wal-Mart/Petco/ Meijer/Petsmart/etc." sticky. It seems someone starts a new thread like that almost every day.

At my super store wal-mart, they had a dozen in lil betta cups with blue water and the water wasnt even a 1/2" deep. The betta's were half out of the water. I asked the store chick in that section why it was like that and she was like i dont know it was like that when i got here today. I wanted to beat her.
I cant even go in the fish section there anymore cause it makes me feel rage in my belly. :mad2:
I think that atleast if walmart is goin to have a fish section they should hire someone that knows about fish and how to take care of them.

I find theses tales of wal-mart very disturbing.Because I was in our wal-mart here in michigan about 2 weeks ago and I couldnt believe my eyes.Every tank...and I mean EVERY single tank had dead fish in it.There were tanks with half eaten fish...and in 2 or more tanks fish were literaly sucked to the filter...dozens.The big goldfish...barely swimming, floating on top of the water.....I was speechless. And to add insult to injury(if at this point it's possible) the guy working in the dept actualy worked in SPORTING GOODS!!!!!! Seriously.....this is more than a mere coincedence. How can it be that every wal mart fish dept is in such dire straits????

my wal-mart only has five gallons(exept for the 20 gal with koi)and they have about 25 fancy goldfish that are living and i dont know how many are dead because they have been stuck to the filter so long they are just a pile of fungus.they also had just dropped a betta in a overcrowder tank of tiger barbs,i told the guy that worked there that the tiger barbs would pick on the betta until they killed him.the guy tried to get him out for about a minute before saying that if i wanted it out i was going to have to get it,so i did,it took me about 30 secs.i just waited until the betta came up to breathe.i wish wal-mart wasnt alowed to sell fish :(
I guess all walmarts are different, but the ones that have the horrible stories are very sad :( We go to walmart almost every day for something or another since we have 3 kids, we're always needing something LOL. We always head back to the fish department and the people they have working back there are very knowledgable most of the time. However, there was one time I was in there and saw 6 dead plecos - all the others seem to be doing fine. So I found someone to get back there and told her that they needed to be taken out. She said "That's not my department and I don't do dead fish. The woman that does that department is gone today". So, I went up to the customer service desk and reported her. They said, she is NOT gone - she was simply cashiering today, but they'd have someone back there right away. By the time I got back to see the fish (a couple minutes) they had them out already and were writing them down. Since we're in Walmart every day nearly, I did find out that this woman is no longer working there because it's not the first time this has happened with her. Our Walmart seems to have people that actually know about fish for the most part. :)
