I have a 55 gallon I plan to divide in half. I am going to put my betta in one half and the one I'm getting in the other half. I wanted to know if I could put eny fish in with them, and if so...what kind.

a word of warning. Be sure the divider is a tight fit and closes to the tank hood because if they want to get past this divider, they will and more often than not, one fish ends up dying.
You can have any fish that doesn't have the flasy color that the betta's have such as guppies or you can have anything that isn't a nipper of slower moving fish. They get along well with cherry barbs, neons, that sort of thing.... Also, it's advised against gourami's.
Almost any fish will do ok with Bettas...
Stay away from agressive fish "fin nippers", and long finned fish such as male guppies etc... Also, I have no experiance with Gouramis, but I have read they can be agressive toward each other... same family.
Just about any Tetras will be fine.
Anything that stays near the bottom, small breed Plecos, Cory Cats, Oto's
Shrimp / Snails seem to do fine.
Allot to choose from!

id have to agree on the gourami thing. they are very agressive towards others of the same species and family. you could say they are the freshwater equivelent of the saltwater sturgeon and tang family. some are very agressive towards anything that is related to them, but then again there are the mebers of the family that are a little more tolerant, but it all depends on the individual fish's temperment

Snails are a great choice in betta tanks since much of a bettas food ends up in the bottom of the tank. They do a great job cleaning up after messy eaters. I keep rosy reds and snails with my betta.

Pretty much been covered by the others:
No agressive/fin-nipping fish
No gouramis
