off topic a little, but I'd like to see a picture of your whole setup. I'm thinking of upgrading to a tank of that size, but am not sure which fish to put in. I like BP's and GT's a lot. Anyway, post a pic of it if you get a chance. Thanks

Those Blood parrots are huge! I didn't realize they developed the nuchal hump as they mature. I assume that one is a male.

Yeah I know. The hump just came one recently. Believe it or not the larger one if a female! I caught her laying eggs just this week! We've had these two for about six years now.

thats really cool! I have no idea if my BP is a male or female. Its only about 3 inches now, but nowhere near as thick as yours are. So, the one with the hump is a female?

Yep. I have no idea about the other one.

Thats a really nice tank. I would love to get one that size to put my wife in. Did I ever say I married a mermaid?

It's a big help when I have fish questions.

Well, if there is a dot or multiple dots on the underbelly fin, isn't it a male?

So, check the farthest fin back on its belly for any dots. These are used in breeding (the female bites, thinking they are eggs, triggering fertiliztion).

(That is, if it's a mouth breeder)

im pretty sure that the only blood parrots that get the hump are the ones called "King Kond" parrots. they are really just blood parrots crossed with midas cichlids.
regular blood parrots do not aquire the nuchal hump though

Oh, that's good to know. That way I don't expect my BP to get a hump. But I was kinda pumped up about seeing it grow. : (
