I recently got two 30 gallon plastic barrels from an agriculture garage. I was wondering if it would be safe to use them for my ro setup after they have been rinsed and cleaned really well. The guys at the garage said they had a chemical similar to roundup in them. What do you all think?

I don't think I would risk it. But then again I am in the middle of reading Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. I would be too worried that the plastic would have absorbed the chemicals and will slowly release them into the water. Kind of the same thought behind not using buckets for anything else other then fish stuff because of the residue left behind from soap.

If it's HDPE plastic (look on the bottom underneath the barrel and it should be a recycling #2), then it should be OK since that kind of plastic is non-reactive.

However, would I do it personally? Probably not.

As everyone's said, it may or may not hurt you tank, but best not find out. Personally, I think anything as reactive as commercial-grade poisons would impregnate into plastic at least a little.

From the title of the thread, I thought someone was going to complain about barrels of herbicide being dumped into a bay or something :D
