I have two convicts male and female in a 55G tank with a pair of rainbows. The females always digging hole all over my tank. I flaten all the rock and she does it again. I heard of this as a breeding behavior but she never lays eggs. And the fact that the two convicts are always together swimming around like right on top of eachother. The two have been in the tank for about 5 months and have always added like a pair but have never fry. The males about 4 inches and the females about 2 inches. Does anyone have any comments? Thanks for all the help.

Just wondering these holes that your convict keeps digging, in my experience
I have seen many convict lay eggs right in these holes and the eggs can be very hard to see at first.
So they might be spawning all this time?

Anyway just my thoughts.

My convicts like dig holes inside a cave or under a piece of slate. I have never seen eggs on anything but a cleaned rock. they usually preferr a surface that is in a moderate water current, at a 30-45 degree angle in and area that would be easy to guard from tankmates.

Let me say that these are only the preferances of my convicts in my experience (besides the female that laid a batch of eggs in the car on the way to trade her, but that was very freakish and she ate them when we got to our destination.) Convicts do have the habit of breeding constantly...anytime...anywhere...
