View Full Version : Lowering Ph
Id like to lower the ph in my tank. Currently:
Ph: 7.5
No2: 0
NH3: 0
GH 3 (degrees?)
Kh 3 (degrees?)
I thought I saw a post on how to translate degrees to ppm but I cant find it. Any how Id like to have the pH at 6.8 or so for my CA cichlid in the tank but I don't want to use chemicals. Will slowly doing water changes with RO help? Should I add some coral to the filter and if so how much per gallon? Thanks

Convert german degrees to ppm by multiplying by 17.9
RO does not always lower pH, sometimes chemical intervention is required.
Peat will lower pH at the hardness you specify.
Adding coral will raise kh and pH, not good.
good luck

...but you'd want to raise the pH for a Central American cichlid, wouldn't you?
Which species?

just place some peat moss in your filter and that should soften and lower the ph of the water.

Fluval makes this product called peat granular media, u can just buy that at a LFS and place it in a pourous media bag where it is then placed in a filter. Peat moss is a natural substance that is often used in gardening to create an ideal soil for plants. Its granular form can be used in aquaria to help lower the pH of the water. Peat works by slowly releasing acids into the water, making the water more acidic rather than basic. Great for Arowanas and other fish who are naturally from acidic (6.7-6.9 pH) waters.
The fish is a Vieja Sinspillia. I keep my other tank at 6.8 with JD Blackbelt Oscar. Is that to low? Should I keed it at 7.5 and try and raise the other one with coral? How much peat should I use per gallon to lower .7 points. Is there a ratio? Thanks for your replies.
