I have a 55 gallon community tank and I was looking into a centerpiece fish for it. Something that won't eat my cardinal tetras. I was planning on an angel, but that doesn't work out, obviously. Preferably something the size of an angel. Any ideas?

Are there any other fish in the tank becides the tetras? If so what are they and how many?
We can go from there once we know the above.

Mollies, Betta, Cory Cats, and I've ordered some apple snails off aquabid. And I hope to get an SAE soon as well.

Perhaps a female Three spot Gouramie? Or a pair of dwarf gouramies?
Also do you like Bettas?

Well yeah, my betta is the one I centered everything around. I looked up the Three-Spot Gourami and I like the idea as long as it gets along with the betta.
The water is hard and I'm not quite sure what the pH is at the moment. I'm at school or I'd get the last results.
Edit: Actually, I just looked further into the Three-Spot gourami and heard they're not good community fish once they get large. =/

putting a beta and a gourami together is a bit of a gamble. It could work, but I wouldn't do it unless I have a place to quickly move one of the fish too.

I have not had good luck with a betta and gourami together. It may work with some, but didn't for me.

What about a moonlight gourami? I've heard they're rather peaceful gourami, getting about 6 inches. If it doesn't work with the betta, that's okay, but might it be okay with the other fish in there?

i don't see why an angel would be a problem, it wouldn't bother cardinals unless they are uber small juveniles

Ah, man, people keep telling me different information. So are cardinal tetras really at risk with an angel or are they not? I heard they're their natural prey.

yep, neon and cardinal tetras seem to be favorite angelfish snacks  Maybe those bright blue and red colors make them seem like moving targets?

Personally, I'm a fan of tetras. My main fish are bleeding hearts, but lemon tetras are eye catching as well. A nice school of about 6-8 is beautiful.
Bleeding hearts grow to about 2.5/3 inches, and lemons stay small to at 1.3 inches.
An angel will eat the smaller ones. If you like the nice fins, mollies come in varieties that can look exotic like the balloon lyretail mollies:

If they're not fullgrown, then I'd be careful.
I'm really just looking for a six-inch fish that won't eat my smaller tetras. And all I've found is the moonlight gourami. If anyone has any information that might persuade me not to get one??

they look nice when they are young, but not so much when they get older. a pearl gourami would look better, and they are just as peaceful
