Hey guys, I don't know if any body here has any experience with these fish. I haven't read anything about them on this site before. But I am still new here.

Here goes nothing. I've got 4 Indian Flasher Barbs (Puntius denisonii), I recently noticed some odd behavior. I have some flat rocks at the bottom of my tank, they are buried in the gravel flat to the bottom. Recently I've noticed a couple of my barbs swimming down to it turning on their sides and rubbing themselves up against them. These are the only rocks like this in the tank and are relativly smooth. Maybe they think it feels good. I have other rocks around the tank that would be more accessible, but they are all quite coarse in texture. They probably wouldn't make very good scatching posts.

Is this all they are doing, or should I beconsidering some sort of sickness here?

Just concerned.

hmm, "flashing" (scratching their sides like that) can be a symptom of several ailments. Including ich, gill irritation, parasites, even bad water. But since they're called "flashing barbs" maybe that's what they do?

I've heard guppies sometimes flash for fun.

My guppies flash all the time. It doesn't matter if I just changed the water, or if I haven't in a week. I guess its just something guppies do. In most other fish though, it can be a sign of disease, but if they are only flashing on a specific surface maybe they just like the feel of it.

Just a recap on the scratching post issue. Turns out that it was a sickness. My tank has Ich. :( At least my Barb's odd behaviour alerted me to a possible health issue. So, I kept a very close watch and spotted the Ich a couple days later as soon as it appeared. Now it is being treated as we speak. Wish my fish luck.

good luck, Lyle. I'm glad the flashing gave you a heads up to their condition. Please let us know, as always, if you need any help with ich treatment or anything else :)

Well everyone. I'm getting very concerned. I have been medicating with Ick Guard 2 for four days now and my fish are getting worse. I've lost 4 Cardinal Tetra's so far and I think probably a few more by tommorrow morning. :( I don't know if this is an inferior product or I have the wrong sickness. But, I have been following all of the directions and my nitrates are only 5 ppm, PH is 7.4 and temp is 80F.

Lyle, I'm sorry to hear things took a turn for the worse. Save your money, and your fish and ditch the chemical ich treatments. I've lost fish to the chemicals alone, and not gotten rid of the ich parasite. Follow the instructions in this article http://www.aquariumboard.com/forums/articles/25-ich-fw.html

It is by far the safest and most effective treatment for ich that I've ever tried. It's fine to use iodized table salt, that's what I used. The amount of iodine in it is minimal, less than what is added in supplements for invertebrates.

Good luck!

Now I'm ticked!! I've got 1 of 14 Cardinal Tetra's left. As it looks my Rummy Nose are not far behind.

Im not happy, I will not endorse Ick Guard 2. Do not buy this product, unless you want alot of dead fish.

I'm going to do the salt thing. Should I add carbon to my tank right away to remove whats left of the Ick Guard 2 medication?

Any info would be great.
